About
The Lupine School started as a nature-based farm preschool in 2018, and added a Kindergarten class in 2023. After many requests from the community to expand, a group of teachers, parents, and members of the community formed the nonprofit elementary school Lupine Community School (LCS) to continue the inclusive, student-centered education model at a new farm location in Chapel Hill. LCS currently serves students through the second grade and will eventually serve grades preschool through 5th grade.
LCS provides an inclusive, Reggio Emilia-inspired, nature-based experience where students interact with the plants and animals on the farm, and have the opportunity to build relationships with the natural world. Students learn collaboration skills through project-based learning opportunities. Our work at the school is rooted in research-driven best practices for education and we follow the NC State Standards.
We welcome diverse learners and students with diverse abilities and needs who fit our program's approach. A core goal of Lupine Community School is to have a diverse and inclusive student body.
Teachers observe, reflect, and design learning opportunities that are multidimensional and allow the child to explore. We provide deep, vibrant outdoor experiences to connect children to the land and their local ecological and agricultural communities.
The farm environment allows teachers to make connections between human rights, environmental sustainability, and global equity. Students learn communication skills and compassion through direct guidance and learn to intersect those skills with academics, diverse community, intercultural curiosity, and environmental stewardship.
